Storm Drainage Design for Underground Stormwater Ponds

This presentation examines the critical design parameters of underground stormwater detention systems, specifically focusing on the intersection of material selection—ranging from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) to modular concrete—and long-term cost-efficiency. By evaluating current specification standards and design methodologies, we will identify actionable strategies to streamline the design process, minimize footprint, and significantly reduce both capital and life-cycle expenditures

Speaker: Brent Hutchinson, PE, Regional Engineer – Southeast Culvert, Inc.

Brent is a civil engineering graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology with an emphasis in transportation design. His twenty-one years in stormwater include sixteen years with construction products manufacturers while providing design assistance with metal and HDPE pipes, underground chambers produced by multiple manufacturers as well as multiple proprietary water quality devices. He designed commercial projects utilizing above ground and underground detention/retention systems in the private sector in rout to obtaining his South Carolina PE license in water resources. Brent is now with Southeast Culvert as the North Carolina engineering representative.
