Overview:
To prepare for millions of EVs that will be steadily replacing internal combustion vehicles (ICE), the US will need thousands of vehicle chargers to be installed. These require careful planning, permitting, and design. After the type and number of charging stalls are developed, considerations should be made for jurisdictional and zoning requirements. Early coordination with the local utility is essential to verify power demarcation and pathways to the charger locations. After these pieces of information are collected a conceptual design can be developed and presented to key stakeholders.
With approvals in hand, the next phase will usually include underground utility locate followed by a property survey. The charging equipment (generally level 2 or 3 for commercial applications) will then be laid out on the survey. Visual assessments, landscaping design, stormwater, lighting, traffic flow, curbs, equipment foundations, ADA compliance, zoning regulations, etc. will be taking into consideration in the final design. We will review both public & fleet charging design considerations as well as some features of the charging stations themselves.
