Overview: The Crestdale Heritage Trail in Matthews NC celebrates the rich history of the Crestdale area of Matthews. A portion of the trail on a low-volume street did not have designated space for bicyclists and pedestrians. Staff considered various options for this space and ultimately decided on an advisory shoulder, which was later painted with a mural during a community event. This session will focus on the background of the trail as well as study observations of the performance of the advisory shoulder as a bicycle and pedestrian facility.
Learning outcomes:
1. Understand the history of the Crestdale area of Matthews and development of the Crestdale Heritage Trail.
2. Identify alternatives for multimodal shared spaces.
3. Understand how users interact with the advisory shoulder on Matthews Chapel Rd
4. Determine whether an advisory shoulder would be applicable in certain situation.
