This presentation will cover the various codes that are applicable to seismic structures, with emphasis on the three primary codes: AISC 341, AISC 360 and AWS D1.8. Seismic Force Resisting Systems (SFRS) have specific design criteria for the steel members themselves, but also specific welding requirements and the inspection requirements with those welds. AISC 341 covers design, fabrication, erection and inspection requirements, while AWS D1.8 covers the welding, inspection techniques and certifications required to weld and examine SFRS welds. Additionally, the different certifications required will be discussed, along with the different certifying agencies associated with those required certifications.
After attending this session, attendees will be able to:
1. Understand the additional inspections required by seismic code and the certifications required to perform those inspections.
2. Realize these differences between the regular building code (AISC 360) and seismic building code (AISC 341).
3. Understand why the seismic building codes and provisions are needed.
4. How to recognize when seismic building provisions are required.
5. Understand what a Demand Critical Weld is.
