While coastal erosion is a natural process, it is being exacerbated due to sea level rise and more frequent and higher intensity storm events. These impacts can make coastal communities significantly vulnerable and can also have significant economic impacts. Living shorelines combine natural coastal habitats with natural and/or engineered means of dissipating the erosive forces that reach the shoreline. These methods help protect human life, prevent damage and property loss and can be more effective while costing less than hard solutions (e.g. builkheads). They also store carbon and enhance habitat. This one-hour webinar will provide you with an introduction to living shoreline design, permitting and implementation and will present case studies of ongoing living shoreline projects.
