The North Carolina General Assembly convenes the 2023-2024 legislative biennium on Wednesday, January 11th. The first week will be mostly ceremonial and organizational with the session expected to begin in earnest on January 25th. We'll begin to see committee assignments and some chamber elections (like electing the Speaker of the House and the President Pro Tempore of the Senate) over the next few weeks. You can view the2022 election recap here or thepost election webinar slides here as a reminder of the legislative makeup. Republicans gained a 30-20 supermajority in the Senate but fell one-seat short of a supermajority in the 120 seat House.
The Republican and Democratic caucuses in both chambers have elected their leaders, with official elections of House Speaker and Senate President Pro Tempore to happen as floor votes once session convenes. A listing of caucus leadership roles is below. We'll provide more frequent updates as the legislature begins its work. Until then, please reach out to your PENC lobbyists Laurie Onorio ([email protected]) and Carson Butts ([email protected]) for any questions, to flag issues you're interested in tracking, and more.
